This book covers the sense you got in school, that something is missing. Whether you excelled or not, it felt lopsided. Analyze, contrast and compare, abstraction, regimented. No context, no creativity. Untouched in the book, this possibly being the origin of some bullying - a herd of kids stuck in an environment designed around the success of a few, some frustrated to the point of aggression. Anyways, Ken looks at blazing successes of people who left the sanctioned/promoted domain of math, science, etc. to follow their own natural bend. Possibly the most important point is brought up in the second half of the last chapter, we're headed in the wrong direction not just in education but in a Avatar/Na'vi way - our relationship with food, health, environment.

It's a reference book that one can actually read. I read one element per day and learned interesting things about each one. Parts of each element's entry are a bit dry, but mostly it's an interesting and enjoyable read IF (a big if) you know something about or care about chemistry or chemistry education -- especially if you teach elementary chemistry or "natural sciences for non-science majors." It includes an unusually well written, clear and brief introduction to the periodic table.
